Fr. Gerry will begin a new chapter in his ministry after this academic year. To honor his extraordinary decade of service, we are launching The Father Gerry Waterman Fund, with a goal of raising $500,000 over five years. This special initiative will sustain and strengthen the ministry that Fr. Gerry built—ensuring that future generations of students experience the same acceptance, fellowship, and formation that define the Catholic Center today.
Your leadership gift would help us continue what Fr. Gerry began: encouraging students to bring their light to the world and know they are loved.
For a decade, Fr. Gerry Waterman, OFM Conv. has touched countless lives at Syracuse University and SUNY ESF—creating a community where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to live their lives with purpose. His legacy is reflected in every student who has found hope and belonging within our walls.
At the SU Catholic Center, the impact of this ministry, in partnership with our staff, is profound: students discover friendship and faith, learn to serve others, and carry these values far beyond campus. Each week, hundreds gather to worship, share meals, and grow in their relationship with God and one another.
This life-changing work is made possible almost entirely by people like you—friends and benefactors who believe in the power of campus ministry. In fact, 90% of our annual operating budget depends on donor support. Without this generosity, we could not sustain the programs and pastoral presence that shape the lives of thousands of young adults.
Gifts of personal property—including rare books, works of art, valuable collectibles and other tangible items of demonstrable value—may enable you to make a significant gift to support the SU Catholic Center while, in some cases, providing outstanding tax benefits to you. Likewise, gifts of intangible personal property, such as copyrights, patents and mineral rights, can generate income for the program of your choice on a continuing basis. Contact us for more information.
Gifts of real estate—including personal residences, second homes, income property and vacant land—offer a wide variety of tax and other benefits. Many people give their entire interest away, but it is also possible to give only a portion of the property (an undivided percentage interest) while retaining the rest for other purposes. Contact us for more information.
Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks and bonds also provide considerable tax advantages when transferred The SU Catholic Center before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, you may find that your gift will provide a twofold tax benefit—creating an income tax deduction and avoiding the capital gains tax that would have been due upon their sale. Contact us for more information.
An easy way to double or even triple your donation to the SU Catholic Center is to find out if your employer has a matching-gift program. Such programs typically match all or a percentage of employee contributions to charitable organizations, making the employer a partner in the personal philanthropy of their employees. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please click here. Simply obtain a matching gift form from your employer’s personnel office and fill it out, listing Syracuse University as the charitable organization. You may direct your gift to us by adding the St. Thomas More Agency Fund as a secondary designation on the form. Send the completed form to us with your contribution.
